LSE lecture series gains Foundation support

altThe Ove Arup Foundation is funding a lecture series by the London School of Economics entitled ‘Cities and the Environment’.

The purpose of the series is to tackle the disproportionate impact cities have on global carbon emissions, and to explore sustainable ways of transforming the ecological performance of the complex urban environment.

The second lecture of the series, 'Climate Change: The City Solution', will be delivered by Ritt Bjerregaard, Mayor of Copenhagen from 2006-09 (pictured). It will take place at 18:30 on 1 June 2010 at the Sheikh Zayed Theatre in the New Academic Building.

A third lecture, 'Balancing Cars and Pedestrians: The Case of New York City', will be delivered by Janette Sadik-Khan, Transport Commissioner for New York City, at a date yet to be confirmed. The lecture will explain how a creative approach to public transport can improve the environmental impact of cities and boost the quality of urban life.

The inaugural lecture, ‘Urban Technologies and the Environment’ was delivered by Peter Head, director of Planning Plus, Arup, and investigated the retrofitting of old cities for a sustainable future.

Audio and video podcasts of the lecture series are also set to be prepared.
