The Ove Arup Foundation is happy to have assisted the University of Warwick’s TEDx 2010 with a grant.
The Warwick event, held on 6 March 2010 at the Univeristy’s Maths & Stats Building, featured Dr Rachel Armstrong (pictured), of the Bartlett School of Architecture, speaking about her innovative approach to designing sustainable building materials.
"I am interested in developing metabolic materials for use in the built environment — but these do not yet exist in architectural practice," says Dr Armstrong. "I'm working with architect Neil Spiller at the Bartlett School of Architecture and collaborating with international scientists where we are taking a bottom-up approach to these new materials. We are working with chemist Martin Hanczyc from Denmark, who is interested in the transition from inert to living matter."
TEDx is an independent spin-off from the hugely successful TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) event held annually in the United States of America. Pioneers from a broad range of disciplines are given an 18-minute platform to convey innovative ideas to a dynamic and receptive audience.
Updates about this and future TEDx Warwick events are available via its dedicated website, its Twitter feed and its Facebook page. Dr Armstrong's blog contains extensive detail about her research.
